Roman Imperial Coinage, Claudius, Sestertius, Rome, 41-2, laureate bust right, ti clavdivs caesar avg p m tr p imp, rev. nero clavdivs drvsvs german imp, triumphal arch surmounted by equestrian statue of Drusus right, flanked by trophies, s c in field, 28.72g (RIC 98; BMC 122; C 48; Sear 1851). Good very fine or better, brown patina £800-1,000

A triumphal arch was commissioned by the senate in honour of Drusus' glorious campaigns in Germania and erected some time after his death in 9 BC. Built of marble and adorned with trophies, it stood on the via Appia, probably a little north of its junction with the via Latina
