Herbert Kettlewell was born in York, and attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment at Leeds, in February 1900. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Second Boer War, 15 April 1902 - 21 October 1902. He was discharged 4 February 1912, having served 12 years with the Colours. He was originally listed as having ‘Forfeited’ his service medals, due to a sentence of 70 days imprisonment for drunkenness in 1902, however this was reversed and his medals were issued in 1906.
