Joseph Payne was born in County Meath, Ireland, and attested for the 1st Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment at Sheffield, in March 1876. He advanced to Sergeant in January 1879, and Colour Sergeant in August 1883. He served with the Battalion in Egypt and the Sudan, 4 August 1884 - 7 April 1886. He was discharged Quarter Master Sergeant, 7 November 1901, having served 25 years and 240 days with the Colours.
