James Willis
was born at Bishop Stortford, Hertfordshire, and enlisted into the Hertfordshire Regiment of Militia on 28 December 1854. He attested for the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade at Portsmouth on 23 March 1855, and was appointed a Bugler on 29 September of that year. He was discharged as unfit for further service on 29 October 1867 after 12 years and 221 days’ service, of which 9 years and 9 months were spent in India. His son, Bugle Major T. J. Willis, also served in the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade (see Lot ***)
