Private E. H. W. Hartnell was a regular soldier serving with the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment. In 1950 the 1st Manchesters along with the 1st King’s were stationed together in West Berlin. In May 1951 the Manchesters were deployed to Malaya and the ‘emergency’ against communist insurgents there. In June 1952 the 1st Battalion King’s (Liverpool) were deployed to South Korea and the war taking place there. In order to reinforce the King’s battalion, a large number of regulars from the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment stationed in Malaya were selected to transfer to the King’s Regiment and go to Korea. Hartnell being one of those selected. With some copied notes.
