M.C. London Gazette 24 September 1918. ‘Lt. William Lloyd Bowen, Mon. R.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in assisting to reorganise scattered units when the enemy broke through, and in assisting to hold the position all night. He used his Lewis guns with great skill, causing considerable casualties to the enemy, and enabling his men to withdraw when the position was untenable.’

Lieutenant William Lloyd Bowen, 3rd, attached 6th Battalion South Wales Borderers, earned the M.C. for his bravery and leadership during the retreat from the Aisne in May 1918. During the advance in late August 1918 Lieutenant Bowen was wounded by shell fire at Dranoutre Ridge. He died of his wounds on 1 September 1918, aged 36 years. He was buried in the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, Pas de Calais, France. Lieutenant Bowen was the son of Lewis and Angelina Bowen, of Glanrhyd Farm, Tredegar, Monmouthshire. With copied research and a modern photograph of his headstone. Both this and his copied m.i.c. record him as being in the Monmouthshire Regiment.
