John Gibbs was born in Hungerford, Berkshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he attested for regular service with the regiment at Devizes on 2 January 1884, aged 21 years. Transferred to the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers in November 1885. Served in India, March 1885-May 1886; Burma, May 1886-November 1888 and India, November 1888-December 1890. For his services he was awarded the India General Service Medal with clasps for Burma 1885-7 and Burma 1887-89. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1891 and discharged in June 1896. Gibbs re-enlisted for Section ‘D’ on 9 June 1896 and was recalled to active service on 27 December 1899 and served in the Boer War. In South Africa he served in ‘D’ Mounted Infantry Company 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers. Served in the relief of Kimberley and the battle of Paardeberg. In the latter action he was wounded by gunshot to the right forearm, 18 February 1900. Gibbs was discharged at Aldershot, being found medically unfit, on 16 November 1900.
