Ernest Bamber was born in Bedford Lee, near Bolton, and attested at Bury on 6 August 1890, aged 19 years. He was taken prisoner at Spion Kop and released on 6 June 1900 when Lord Roberts entered Pretoria. Also entitled to the King’s South Africa medal.
