The following is extracted from a contemporary newspaper report:

‘News was received on Friday last of the death of Lieut. Charles Dutton, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, younger son of Mr James Dutton, solicitor, Acresfield and Cranford Heaton. Lieut. Dutton who was 26 years of age, was educated at Hutton Grammer School, Preston and Shrewsbury. On leaving school he was articled to his father and had passed his intermediate examination. At the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Public Schools Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, and in September 1914, received a commission in the Lancashire Fusiliers. About 12 months ago he went to France and was stationed in the Ypres salient, but was recently removed to another part of our front, where he met his death. His commanding officer, Col. Torrens, writes in a letter to Mrs Dutton: “He was killed instantaneously by a bullet, so he did not suffer any pain. One of the old battalion, he was very dear to us, and his loss will be greatly felt. A good brave fellow, he died fighting hard.” ‘
