HUDDERSFIELD, The Mrs Sutherland Prize for Vocal Music, 1888, award medals (6), in silver (5) and copper, unsigned [one stamped by Marples & Beasley, one by Fattorini], named (Arthur Lloyd, Violin, 1902; George Borwell, Honley National School Choir, 1904; H. Augustus Leath, Pianoforte, 1905; Emily Harrop, 1927, Contralto; Kenneth Griffiths, Bass Solo, 1948), all 41mm, silver total wt 160.13g (cf. DNW M11, 1059) [6]. One silver and the copper extremely fine, others in varied state £100-150

The 1927 silver medal only illustrated. Susanna Sutherland, née Sykes (1819-1905), b. Brighouse, the famous soprano soloist, was referred to by Queen Victoria as ‘the Queen of Song’. The occasion of her golden wedding to her husband, Henry, in 1888, witnessed a special concert, the profits from which were used to start an annual competition which has been held every year since, except 1940, and now lasts for 9 days
