Pair: Private John Armstrong, Royal Highlanders, one of the small detachment that served in Matabeleland in 1893, who was subsequently killed in action at Magersfontein

British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97, reverse Matabeleland 1893 (3583 Pte. J. Armstrong. 1st Batt. R. Highls.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-19021 clasp, Cape Colony (3583 Pte. J. Armstrong, 2: R. Highrs.) the first with pawnbroker’s mark in obverse field, the second with brooch fitting to reverse of clasp carriage, otherwise nearly extremely fine and a rare pair (2) £2500-3000

One officer and 17 men of the 1st Battalion joined the expedition to quell the Matabele rebellion in 1893, serving as Mounted Infantry with the Bechuanaland Police from October 1893 to March 1894. Armstrong served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa and was killed in action at Magersfontein on 11 December 1899. Sold with research.
