A Salford man, William Patrick Quinn enlisted on 17 February 1913. Serving with the 1st Battalion, he sailed on the Saturnia to France, disembarking at Boulogne on 23 August 1914. The battalion went into action near Le Cateau on 26 August and Quinn was wounded in the retreat from Mons. On recovery he was posted to the 2nd Battalion and was wounded at the battle of Loos in 1915. After recovering once more, he was transferred to the 7th Battalion which saw action in the Battle of the Somme and Third Battle of Ypres. On disbandment of the 7th Battalion in February 1918 he was drafted into the 1/5th Battalion which served in the 55th Division’s defence of the La Bassee sector in April 1918. On 10-12 October 1918, during the Final Advance, the battalion suffered much gas-shelling. Here, Quinn, gassed and shell-shocked was invalided home. He was discharged due to sickness in March 1919 and received the Silver War Badge. His home address was 9 Allen Street, Lower Broughton, Salford.
