Robert Cumpsty was born in Lancaster in 1877. He transferred from the original 1st (Volunteer) Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment to the new 2nd (Volunteer) Battalion formed in Lancaster in 1900. In early 1901 he enlisted for one year’s service in South Africa with No. 2 Volunteer Service Company, attached to the 2nd Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment, returning home in June 1902. In 1908 the 2nd (Volunteer) Battalion became the 5th (Territorial) Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment. Embodied for service on 5 August 1914, Cumpsty entered France on 14 February 1915 with the 1/5th Battalion. As part of 83 Brigade, 28 Division, the unit fought in the Potijze Wood, Zonnebeke, Frezenberg area in April/May 1915 during the 2nd Battle of Ypres. Cumpsty was discharged on 11 March 1916 but later rejoined the regiment, serving with the 12th Battalion until discharged once more at the end of the war. He died on 20 March 1954.
