John Richmond Bleasdale was born in Lancaster in 1866. He attested for the Royal Lancaster Regiment at Lancaster on 20 November 1882 and was appointed a Drummer in March 1883; Private in May 1884; Lance-Corporal in February 1885; Corporal in April 1886; Lance-Serjeant in October 1887 and Serjeant in December 1888. Served in India with the 2nd Battalion, December 1889-April 1893. Returning to England in 1893, he was posted to the permanent staff of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion at Lancaster. Attained the rank of Colour Serjeant in October 1894. Served in South Africa with the 3rd Battalion, February 1900-February 1902. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. in 1901. Discharged to a pension at his own request on 13 January 1905 - his intended place of residence being 21 Eastham Street, Lancaster. With copied service papers and other research including two copied group photographs, with Bleasdale identified, at the Southampton dockside prior to sailing to South Africa in February 1900.
