John Prince Futcher was born in Southampton. A Shoemaker by occupation, he attested for the Royal Lancashire Regiment at Aldershot on 5 January 1871, aged 19 years. He served in Gibraltar, September 1874-January 1879 and the West Indies, January 1879-June 1882. Appointed Paymaster Sergeant on the Permanent Staff of the 4th (Militia) Battalion in July 1885 and appointed Quartermaster Sergeant in the Military Staff Corps in April 1890. Discharged on 14 January 1892 and granted the Meritorious Service Medal with annuity in 1915.
