George William Ekins was born in Amballa, India. He enlisted into the Bedfordshire Regiment as a Boy at Bellary on 7 October 1885, aged 15 years, 4 months. Appointed a Bandsman in October 1889. Transferred to the Royal Lancaster Regiment in August 1897. Served in the East Indies, October 1885-February 1892 and in South Africa, December 1899-January 1901. Returning to England, he was discharged as medically unfit on 15 November 1901.
