William Mahoney was born in London. A Tailor by occupation, he attested for the 2nd Battalion 4th Regiment at Westminster on 16 December 1857, aged 18 years. Deserted, May 1858-February 1859. Served on Corfu and the Mediterranean for over six years; in North America for over two years and in South Africa for over one year. The South Africa Medal with clasp 1879 was his only medallic award. Latterly a Chelsea Pensioner.

With copied discharge papers and other research - includes a copied photograph of Mahoney as a Chelsea Pensioner. His medal was issued in 1906.
