Thomas Jones was born in West Bromwich, Birmingham. A Moulder by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Colchester on 5 December 1885, aged 21 years. Served in India, September 1887-January 1892. In 1887 he claimed the Queen’s Pardon on confession of fraudulent Enlistment - having been a deserter from the Royal Engineers as 19806 Driver W. Johnson. He served in South Africa, January 1900-May 1901. He was one of only two men of the 44th Battery to be awarded the ‘Belfast’ clasp. Discharged on completing his period of engagement on 1 April 1902. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
