John Thomas Heaton was born in Rochdale, Lancashire. A Shoeing Smith by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Manchester on 28 May 1900, aged 29 years. He served as a Shoeing Smith with the 38th Battery R.F.A. in South Africa, June 1900-September 1901. Discharged on 23 September 1901. With copied service papers and roll extract.
