John Murdock was born in Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland. A Shoemaker by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Leith on 4 March 1887, aged 18 years, 11 months. He served with the R.H.A. at home, being transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1894 and re-engaged in March 1899. Recalled to the Colours in December 1899, he served in South Africa with ‘A’ and ‘O’ Batteries R.H.A., December 1899-June 1902. Promoted to Corporal Collar Maker in March 1900, he was tried and reduced to Bombardier Collar Maker in January 1902. Once more transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1903, he was discharged on 3 March 1903. With copied service papers.
