Sydney Smith was born on 26 August 1850. He joined the service on 16 July 1870 as an Assistant District Superintendent of Police in the Punjab Police. Served in the Afghanistan War 1878-80 and was awarded the medal without clasp. At the time he was District Superintendent 4th Grade at Derra Gaza Khan. Promoted to District Superintendent 2nd Grade at Lahore in November 1896 and to 1st Grade at Lahore in June 1900. Was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police, Western Circle in January 1903. On special duty at the time of Durbar in December 1902. Retired in August 1905 but was also awarded the Delhi Durbar Medal of 1911.
