William Wicks was born near Chippenham, Wiltshire. A Groom by occupation, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Chippenham on 21 February 1901, aged 20 years, 10 months. Posted to the 1st (Wiltshire) Company, 1st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, he served in South Africa, 14 March 1901-27 August 1902. He was discharged at Aldershot on 3 September 1902 having completed his period of service. With copied service papers.
