George Preston was born in the Parish of St. Saviour’s, London. A Tailor by occupation, he attested for the Dorsetshire Regiment at Bow Street, London on 5 December 1882, aged 14 years. With the regiment he served abroad in the Mediterranean, March-December 1885; Egypt, December 1885-August 1886; Mediterranean, February 1888-July 1889, and Egypt, July 1889-November 1892. He was awarded his only medal, the L.S. & G.C. by Army Order 95 of 1901. As a Drummer, he was discharged at Portsmouth on 4 December 1903, being found medically unfit for further service. With copied service papers.
