William Silcocks was born in Trowbridge. A Brushmaker by occupation and a member of the 1st Wiltshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, he attested for short service with the Wiltshire Regiment at Trowbridge on 17 January 1900, aged 23 years. He served in South Africa, 16 February 1900-29 April 1901, being discharged at his own request on 30 April 1901. In the Great War he served in the 2/4th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment. With copied service papers and photocopied group photograph.
