William James Paul was born in Henbury, near Bristol, Gloucestershire. A Blacksmith by occupation, he attested for the Wiltshire Regiment at Bristol on 6 March 1893, aged 19 years, 9 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in the East Indies, February 1896-March 1902; then with the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, March-September 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1903, he was discharged in March 1909. With copied service papers.
