1854 pattern Coldstream Guards officer’s sword, blade 83cm by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London (No 3053) etched with VR cypher, regimental device, battle honours to Tel-el-Kebir, and owners family crest within a cartouche, plated steel guard with regimental device, fish-skin covered grip bound with silver wire, plating somewhat worn and dull, but generally very good condition £300-350

Sword sold by Wilkinson to H. W. Studd, 12th November 1890.

Herbert William Studd was born on 26 December 1870, and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1891, he served through the South African War 1899-1902, was awarded the D.S.O., Queen’s & King’s medals, and was mentioned in despatches. He served through the Great War,was severely wounded and mentioned in despatches, awarded the C.M.G. and C.B. and made a Brevet Colonel, besides numerous foreign orders. He became Chief of Staff, British Section, Supreme War Council 1917-1919, commanded his regiment in 1919, and retired in 1923.
