William Deveson was born at Wingham, Kent, and enlisted into the 11th Hussars on 21 May 1867. He served in India for 10 years and was promoted Troop Sergeant-Major in May 1878. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with gratuity in 1885, and promoted to R.S.M. the following year. He was awarded the M.S.M. under Army Order No. 8 of January 1906, the only award to the regiment during the reign of Edward VII. As a Sergeant he received from the C.-in-C., Lord Napier, a sword for being the best shot in the Cavalry and Artillery in India.
