Matthew Palmer was born in the Parish of Hillington, near Lynn, Norfolk, and enlisted at Westminster on 6 August 1870, aged 18. He served as a Sergeant in Afghanistan in 1878-79, including the assault and taking of Ali Musjid. Promoted to Troop Sergeant-Major in April 1880, he reverted to Sergeant once more in December 1883. He served in the Soudan from 19 February 1884, and was slightly wounded by a spear in the back of his right shoulder at the battle of El-Teb on the 29 February, returning home on 22 April (Entitled to Egypt medal with clasp for El-Teb). He served in South Africa for one year from November 1884, but otherwise completed his service in the United Kingdom. He was promoted back up to Troop Sergeant-Major in October 1887 and finally discharged on 8 August 1891. His Meritorious Service Medal was announced in Army Order 345 of 1925.
