Arthur Thomas Shorter was born in Croydon, Surrey on 30 November 1888. By occupation, a Dealer to a firm of stockbrokers, he enlisted into the Surrey Yeomanry on 16 February 1909. Serving as a Corporal with “C” Squadron, he entered the Balkan theatre of war on 1 April 1915 and Gallipoli on 21 March 1915. Posted to Egypt in August 1915, he was promoted to Acting Sergeant and thence to Sergeant in February 1916. He was transferred to France in May 1916 and in November was tried by General Court Martial for neglect of duty, was found guilty and reduced to Private. He regained his rank in March 1917 and in June the same year was discharged to a commission in the Machine Gun Corps. 2nd Lieutenant Shorter was wounded on 24 August 1918, near Croiselles - taking a slight gunshot wound to the right arm and a slight shrapnel wound to the left leg, for which he was invalided to England. He was released from military duty on 31 January 1919. Sold with copied m.i.c. and 27 sheets of service papers.
