Private John C. Black, “B” Squadron, Surrey Yeomanry, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 March 1915 and served there until January 1916 before proceeding to the Balkan theatre of war, January 1916-June 1917. He was discharged to a commission in the 4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment on 30 January 1918 and promoted to Lieutenant in October 1920. Black is mentioned in The History and War Records of the Surrey Yeomanry by Harrison-Ainsworth as an enthusiastic organizer of boxing competitions within the Surrey Yeomanry. Between the wars he was employed at Lloyd’s Bank in the City of London and was also a Mounted Special Constable in the Lloyd’s Bank Company, ‘E’ Division, City of London Police. On the outbreak of the Second World War he was recommissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers as an Inspector of Machinery, 1 July 1940 and promoted War Substantive Captain, 1 July 1943. Sold with some copied service details. Also with the recipient’s card forwarding box for his Defence and War Medals, addressed to ‘Major J. C. Black, 7 Mayfield Villas, Barley Lane, Goodinayes, Ilford’.
