Gilbert Grant first went into action in the regiment’s celebrated charge at Shabkadar on 5 September 1915 (his MIC entry confirms). He later joined the regimental machine-gun section at Risalpur.

Percy Batson transferred from the 9th Lancers to the 21st Lancers at Rawalpindi in March 1913 and first went into action in the latter regiment’s celebrated charge at Shabkadar on 5 September 1915 (his
MIC entry confirms). He was subsequently seconded to the Persian Gendarmarie and the South Persian Rifles 1917-18, with whom he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 18 May 1920 refers) and awarded the M.M. - the latter being presented to him at the King’s Birthday Parade in 1920. Batson transferred to the Queen’s Bays in February 1922, having gained advancement to Lance-Sergeant.
