Six: Farrier Quarter-Master Sergeant F. A. Jackson, 21st Lancers, late 20th Hussars, who rode in ‘C’ Squadron in the charge at Omdurman

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 1 clasp, Suakin 1885 (2155 Pte., 20th Husrs.), single initial ‘F.’; Queen’s Sudan 1896-98 (3974 S.S. Farr., 21/Lcrs.), single initial ‘A.’; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (3974 Far. St. Sgt., 21st Lancers); Army Meritorious Service Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue (Farr. Q.M. Sjt., 21-Lrs.); Khedive’s Star, 1884-6, the reverse regimentally impressed ‘2155 20 H.’; Khedive’s Sudan 1896-1908, 1 clasp, Khartoum (3974 S.S.F., 21st Lcrs.), single initial ‘F.’, the first with contact marks, edge bruising and polished, thus fine, the second good fine and the remainder generally very fine or better (6) £2500-3000

Frederick Archibald Jackson was born in Warwick and enlisted in the 20th Hussars in June 1883, aged 19 years. Subsequently engaged with his regiment in the Suakin operations of 1885, he was advanced to Staff Sergeant Farrier in July 1890 and transferred to the 21st Lancers in the same rank in May 1897. As stated above, he was consequently present in the famous charge at Omdurman in the following year, when he rode in ‘C’ Squadron.

Jackson was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1905, in which year he was discharged in Ireland, but soon after the advent of hostilities in August 1914, he rejoined the Colours at Birmingham. Posted to the 7th Reserve Cavalry Regiment in October of the same year, in the rank of Farrier Quarter-Master Sergeant, he remained employed in a similar capacity in the U.K. until discharged ‘over age’ in November 1917. He was awarded his M.S.M. in 1939 and died in 1948, aged 84 years.
