Bernard William McGovern was born and lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire and enlisted at Halifax. Serving with the West Riding Regiment, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 14 August 1914. With the 2nd Battalion he was killed in action on 8 September 1915, aged 20 years - being one of two ‘other ranks’ killed on that day due to enemy shelling. He was buried in the Carnoy Military Cemetery, Somme, France. Private McGovern was the son of Patrick and Catherine McGovern of Bradford.
