Charles Webb was born in Stonehose, Devonshire. A Gardener by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Devonshire Regiment, he attested for full-time service in the Devonshire Regiment on 1 August 1908, aged 18 years. He served in France, 21 August-3 November 1914, being wounded at Festubert, 30 October 1914. Webb returned to France, 1 March 1916-8 November 1917, gaining the rank of Acting Company Sergeant-Major in November 1916. He was discharged to a commission in the 3rd Battalion Devonshire Regiment on 26 February 1918. Post-war he served in the Reserve of Officers. With a quantity of of copied service papers.
