Harold William Sidley, who was born in Nottingham in July 1887, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps in May 1916 and qualified for his “Wings” in a Maurice Farman Biplane at the Military School, Birmingham in the following month (Aviator’s Licence No. 3146). He was, however, subsequently employed as an Equipment Officer, in which capacity he served out in France from September 1916 to August 1917, latterly on attachment to No. 5 Squadron, an artillery observation unit equipped with R.E. 8s. On his return to the U.K., Sidley was employed as a Staff Officer, gaining advancement to Lieutenant in October 1917 and to Acting Major in May 1918. He was placed on the Unemployed List in August 1920.
