The torpedo gunboat H.M.S. Niger, commanded by Lieutenant Commander A. P. Moore, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine on 11 November 1914, off Deal Pier. No lives were lost and the ship’s company was taken off by the Deal and Kingsdown lifeboats. Following immediately on from this, many residents of Deal offered and supplied aid, food and shelter to the survivors. The Mayor of Deal, Mr Thomas Adams awarded a special medal to the lifeboat crews and from a specially subscribed fund certain other silver medals were awarded to those who had assisted. Mrs Pinnock being awarded one such medal.

Mrs Pinnock’s daughter, Miss E. F. Pinnock, served in the Church of Scotland Huts and Canteen Service in Palestine 1945-48. Sold with copied research.
