Samuel Adlard was born at Wood Enderby, Lincolnshire, and attested for the Royal Artillery on 1 January 1810. He served ‘3 Years 10 Months Peninsula & France - 1 Year American Expedition & 6 Years Corfu - Was at the Siege of St Sebastian - At the Battles of Vittoria, the Nive & Toulouse. In America at the taking of Washington, and at the attacks of Baltimore & New Orleans, and afterwards with the Battering Train in the Netherlands at the taking of six Frontier Towns in the Year 1815.’

Samuel Adlard was discharged on 31 December 1832, suffering from ‘chronic rheumatism and varicose veins.’ He survived to claim his M.G.S. medal with clasps for Vittoria, Pyrenees, St Sebastian, and Toulouse, which medal was sold at Glendining in 1912. Sold with copy discharge papers.
