Thomas Saunders was born in St. Margarets, Ipswich on 25 May 1858. A Bookbinder by trade, he enlisted into the Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 18 August 1873. Rated as an Ordinary Seaman in May 1876, he became a Sick Berth Attendant in March 1877, attaining the rank of Sick Berth Steward 1st Class in October 1885. He was discharged invalided on 3 August 1894. Sold with copied service paper.
