James Went was born in Ardleigh, Colchester, Essex. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Rifle Brigade at Daventry on 29 November 1854, aged 17 years, 5 months. In March 1857 he volunteered for service with the 1st Battalion 60th Rifles and was transferred to the 3rd Battalion in June the same year. Having served in India for over 13 years, he was discharged at Chatham on 28 June 1876. Sold with copied service papers.
