Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, Alexandria 11th July (G. Johnson, Sign. 2/Cl., H.M.S. Penelope) good very fine £130-150

George Johnson was born in Frolesworth, Leicestershire in February 1856 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class in June 1873. A Signalman 2nd Class by the time of his service aboard H.M.S. Penelope (July 1882), he was discharged ashore from the Iris as ‘undesirable’ in December 1883, following numerous stints in the cells, including a sentence of 42 days in Malta; sold with a file of research, including copied service record and a picture postcard of the Iris.
