David Michael Rogers was born on 13 March 1936, the son of Rev. C. G. Rogers, Rector of West Horsley. Educated at Lancing School. Commissioned as a National Service Officer in 1956; joined the R.A.C. (A.E.R.) in 1960, and in 1962 was serving with the Leicester and Derby Yeomanry.
