John Henry Prout was born in Saltash, Cornwall on 3 July 1865. A Fitter by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Artificer 4th Class on 15 June 1887. Serving on Temeraire, May 1888-October 1890, he was confirmed in his rank in July 1888 and advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in June 1890. Promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in June 1896 at Vivid II and E.R.A. 1st Class and C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in 1899 while based at the Keyham Torpedo Stores. He served on Isis, September 1902-April 1907, being awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. and attaining the rank of C.E.R.A. in March 1905. Prout was pensioned in June 1909 but returned to the service in August 1914. He served aboard the old battleship Majestic from 18 August 1914 and was on board the vessel when she was torpedoed and sunk off Cape Helles by U.21 on 27 May 1914. Some 40 men went down with the ship. Prout survived the loss and was demobilised on 20 June 1916.
