George McVicar Tarbet was born in Glasgow on 19 September 1896. Entering the Royal Navy in March 1899, he served on Niobe as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class, September 1899-October 1900. He attained the rank of E.R.A. 1st Class in March 1911. Served on Warrior, November 1912-February 1915; Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1914. Later served on Thrasher, Vivid, P.13 and P.75. Pensioned in 1921.

H.M.S.
Warrior was an armoured cruiser; badly damaged at the battle of Jutland, she foundered while being towed, 1 June 1916.
