Herbert Bradley Corteen was born in Shoreditch, London on 28 June 1862. A Fitter by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 22 September 1884. Serving on Carysfort, February 1885-October 1889, he saw service at Suakin and was confirmed in his rank in October 1885 and was advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in September 1887. Promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in September 1891 when on Hearty; C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1896 when on Gleaner and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in January 1902. Corteen was pensioned in September 1906 but returned to service in August 1914, serving on Actaeon, August 1914-May 1916. He was invalided on 31 August 1916 due to a disease of the eyes.
