John Ogilvie Davidson was born in Edinburgh on 29 September 1856. Entering the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 9 November 1877, he was confirmed in that rank in April 1879. Served on Superb, October 1880-December 1883, taking part in the bombardment of Alexandria, 11 July 1882. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in December 1887 when on Asia. He attained the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer in 1891 when on Excellent. Pensioned ashore on 3 December 1897 and invalided from the service on 4 November 1898.
