Colour Sergeant John Kellie, 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, aged 32 years, attempted to rescue Private A. Milne, aged 20 years, of the same battalion, at Fyzabad, India, on 1 July 1893.

‘The Regiment was practising outpost duty when Milne fell into the well owing to the darkness from trees. The depth from the surface to the water was 45 feet, with 15 feet of water. Kellie volunteered to go down and was lowered by two ropes. He dived twice but was not successful in reaching the man who was unfortunately drowned.’ (R.H.S. Case No. 26,873).
