Septimus Halcorn, aged 6 years, of 11 Nelsons Bank, South Shields, fell from the landing stage into the water at Mill Dam, South Shields on 19 May 1890. The place being reported as ‘notoriously filthy, tide at half ebb’. Ralph Hall, aged 43 years, a Fireman of Academy Hill, South Shields; his attention being called, ran to the quay, jumped in with all his clothes on and succeeded with great difficulty in saving the boy.
