Experiments with the use of pure nickel for coinage were begun in 1919, but it was not until 1923, with the installation at the Mint of a small gas furnace with four burners capable of melting nickel without oxygen enrichment of the gas, that the production of trial pieces could commence. Nickel bars for the purpose were supplied by the Mond Nickel Co Ltd
