Badges, Buttons and Livery, Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames, a plated Free Waterman’s arm badge, c. 1805, arms above panel enamelled 3299 in blue, 122mm (Holland p.58, this piece). Pierced for wear at four points, generally very fine, very rare £80-100

Provenance: Bt March 1992.

The recipient of the badge was Thomas Harvey, who served his apprenticeship from 1790-7. This type of circular badge was first introduced in 1803, but they proved not to be popular and their use seemed to have died out within a few years. Sold with a relating article by the vendor from
Canal & Riverboat, November 2000
