The Collection of Irish Coins formed by the Late Adolf Ganter

Adolf Charles Ganter

Adolf Charles Ganter (1925-2009), born into a family of watch and clockmakers in Dublin, qualified as a dental surgeon in 1949 and ran his own practice in the city from 1951 to 1991. An enthusiastic amateur genealogist, he traced his family tree in Germany back to 1590 (his grandfather had emigrated to Dublin from the Black Forest in 1862). He had a huge range of interests, from trout .fishing (being a past President of the Dublin Trout Anglers Association) to gardening and numismatics.

Mr Ganter began collecting Irish coins in the late 1960s, coinciding with the publication of the popular catalogues by Dowie and Finn and Seaby. He bought most of his coins from the late Emil Szauer and the late Stuart Lane, augmented by occasional purchases from dealers in England; a few later additions were made by his son in recent years. Mr Ganter published two articles on the subject in Irish Numismatics in the early 1980s, one of which researched references about coins in the works of James Joyce.
